A few days ago, someone said to me, ‘I like my customers, sometimes more than the things I have to do for them.’
I’ve been turning that over in my head ever since.
He happened to be in the legal profession, but that doesn’t really matter. In every type of business, we sometimes have to do things for our customers that we don’t find particularly interesting or worthwhile. But that should be a minor part of what we do, if we’re running our businesses right.
It irritates me when I hear people complaining about their customers: they seem to have forgotten who, in the end, pays their mortgage or funds their kids’ education.
Like the chap I met, I’m interested in what my clients do, and I feel honoured to be allowed to help them. Liking my clients and the results we achieve together more than makes up for some of the less interesting things I sometimes have to do for them.
What about you? Do you actually like your customers?
