I just received some fantastic feedback from someone I met at a seminar organised by local solicitors, Gorvins. Sitting with a group of lovely ladies, we had a great conversation about how positive psychology can be used every day.
So I suggested that the next time they were out shopping or buying a coffee, they should engage whoever is serving them in conversation – it’s as simple as asking ‘how are you?’ before you’re served. And I asked them to let me know what happened next.
This is the email I just received.
Following the discussions we had, I must admit I am making a conscious effort to be more aware of people’s body language and act on it, as I found what you were saying very interesting and like you said there is a lot of common sense thinking behind it all.
You suggested that we have the task of actually asking someone how they are etc. I plucked up the courage to do this to someone who served me the other day in a shop, I got a response back and a smile! But I also found myself on the receiving end of this as well when I came out of my local co-op an old gentleman out of the blue just said good afternoon to me which I responded to, he then went on to tell me that a B&M shop had opened in Stockport and as we were both walking in the same direction he continued to tell me about when it had opened, we then separated said have a nice day to each other and went our separate ways. I have to say it made me feel good, to be honest I had walked out of the shop with a bit of a face on me but it did make me think, a positive attitude and communication goes a long way.
Thank you so much for the insight you gave us as it has given me a nudge to be more aware and not be so wrapped in just the day to day stress of work.
Try it! You will be amazed what comes back to you. Let me know what you discover.
